"I had GI issues" might be one of the most commonly uttered phrases in triathlon, but why does it keep popping up? Probably because we don't train enough to our NUTRITION and HYDRATION. We hate to say it, but Nutrition takes practice and there are hundreds of variables, like did you have spicy food and 3 margaritas last night? Today, we give you some better ways to keep your energy and stomach solid on the way to a great race.

- From Kuwait to Chattanooga
- Liquid vs solid nutrition on the bike? Benefits of each?
- How do you experiment with nutrition throughout training?
- Is there a good way to calculate liquid needs in training to thread the needle between over/under hydrating?
- How to train for a race that is no where close to the conditions you have to train in? (IE a hilly course when you live someplace with no hill access. Training for heat in a cooler climate)
- Any opinions on the newest IM run training trend that’s sweeping the nation, 10-17?
- Is your heart rate monitor slowing you down?
- Would you ever consider trying to start your own triathlon event?
- "Should I or shouldn't I do this race?"... what factors do you recommend taking into consideration?

Coach Robbie and Mike, along with 12 or so Crushing Iron coached athletes will be at Ohio 70.3 this year so please say hi if you see them around.

Today, we get into a great discussion of how "just enough" in all those areas can come together, and while it may not mean a PR, it COULD mean a great performance. And a great performance should always be the goal.

The days leading up to a race can be filled with stress and anxiety, but it's not so bad if you remember to be yourself. There's no reason to go into a race thinking that suddenly you are going to turn into the "Tri-Calc" number you have in your head. Jump in the water, soak in the moment, and let your attitude in life take over the day. You'll have a lot more fun.

We start with discussion about how and why your body may seem like it's begging you to stop when it may actually be telling you to go faster.

Then we get into Race Obsession and how can we turn down the voices in our head and relax. It's not easy but we get into how focusing on the right things can take pressure off your race. We also talk about relaxation (before and during the race) is the key to improving and racing well. We also talk about when it's probably best to just say, "F-it."

Ironman Texas created a shit-storm over on-course drafting so we thought we'd banter some ideas around to see what came up. We think we have found a real solution that has nothing to do with extra marshals, more timing mats, or extra cameras on the course. Essentially it all comes down to how they start the race. We start warming up and getting closer to the answer about halfway through the podcast.

Today's podcast is a discussion based on this rant titled, "The Watering Down of Ironman" by Bruce Butler.

Here's an excerpt from the post:

"This change was part of Ironman’s “SwimSmart initiative,” with the goal of “improving athlete satisfaction and reducing anxiety during the swim portion of the race.” As part of this initiative, floats are also available so swimmers can stop and take a breather if needed.

Seriously?"

We address his post, but look at many other ways we can all enjoy the sport more and offer a solid potential solution for the Mass Swim Start dilemma.

- Why not have some Mass Starts?
