Instead of asking why, start saying Why Not? Today we explore the power of moving forward without fear and how that clears the deck for each day. What if there were no New Years and days just kept counting up? We get into the mental aspects of training and the excitement that racing brings and how much we miss it. Robbie talks about being a parent. Mike remembers losing his father one year ago today and how it stripped away many fears. It’s been a tough year, but “what matters most is how well you walk through the fire.”*

Back to the Crushing Iron Facebook Group (Search Crushing Iron Group) for listener questions and we got some good ones! Favorite bike workouts, changing bike cassettes for different courses, our bikes of choice, superstitions, adjusting power and HR numbers for races, how the podcast has changed our approach, and how we coach athletes that struggle with consistency. Questions are below and we had a great time!

Questions Answered:

  • What is Robbie’s favorite bike workout, be specific. (Will Mike share his??)
  • If I’m going to change to easier gearing for a hilly triathlon (In my case 70.3 Blue Ridge and then IMWI), should I just keep training with the cassette I have over the winter since it’s harder and if so, when would be a good time to change to the easier cassette relative to race day?
  • What kind of bikes does Mike own?? I'm figuring there has got to be more than one
  • What are your superstitions, or what you have to have, need, or do before a race?
  • At a high level, what is best way to strategize your “numbers” for a race? Is there a best approach to swim pace, bike power, and run pace based on your training numbers?
  • Are our tires less inflated than we intend to be by losing that quick puff of air when disconnecting the pump...or am I the only one that struggles with this?
  • Doing my first 70.3 next year, what are the things you wish you knew when you did your first half back in the day?
  • My first 70.3 in Augusta last year was brutally hot but I felt the crowd and atmosphere around me at all times and so mentally I felt strong the whole race. A month ago I did the bike leg of the full Ironman at the Great Floridian and it absolutely killed me from a mental standpoint. What tactics or things can I do leading up to my first full in Chattanooga this year to help from a mental stamina standpoint? I’m starting to learn quickly that Ironman is actually a 4 sport game and not just 3.
  • How has this podcast changed you both athletically - pressure to stay consistent? Accountability?
  • If you could make one rule that every triathlete MUST follow to participate in the sport, what would it be?
  • Have you guys done any sweet jumps on your race bikes?
  • Looking back on 2020 and how much changed from Jan 1, how are you planning on planning and attacking 2021 differently from both the physical and the mental perspective? I guess more specifically, in terms of the self coached athlete looking to start planning some training blocks.
  • How do you, Robbie and Mike, work with and coach athletes who struggle with consistency year-round?

Challenge Daytona was awesome with an absolutely loaded field and we learned a lot from what was pretty much a flawless broadcast. We loved the format, the level of competition, and frankly seeing athletes out on the course. We talk about their swim, bike and run strategies. What paid off, what didn’t. We look at penalties, bike splits, and the potential for Challenge to focus changing the landscape of 70.3 racing in the US.

Today we talk about the benefits of running trails, the trouble with speed work, and why Ironman is not about going fast, but "who slows down the least." We dive into understanding zones, intervals, and solving the complex combination of swim, bike, run that is triathlon. When in doubt, treat yourself with kindness.

This is a great guide for RACE RUNNING and how to train for it. We focus on Ironman, but the same holds true for 70.3, Olympics, and Sprints. For one, we want to strengthen our chassis so we don’t have to walk. And, if we don’t handle the swim and bike right, none of this really matters. It’s a pretty deep dive into accumulated fatigue, accumulated fitness, how to know when you’re in good shape, and why bricks and your long runs might be disrupting your progress.

Topics:

  • Walk/run vs. Run
  • Brick Running Overrated??
  • Your body doesn’t care what’s stressing it
  • Running is Running
  • How to practice running on tired legs
  • You don’t get extra points for running off the bike
  • *When running off the bike makes sense
  • Why you should run before you ride
  • Don’t practice bad running form
  • Run on the “freshest” legs
  • Running off the bike feels weird, but . . .
  • Do you focus on Swim/Bike bricks??
  • How the swim cascades into your run
  • Energy expenditure at Ironman
  • What your purpose should be on the swim
  • Does your bike feel like a warm up for the run?
  • Ironman doesn’t “start” until mile 80 of the bike
  • Or . . . Mile 20 of the run.
  • “I crushed the bike . . .”
  • Bike for Show, Run for Doe
  • There’s no such thing as a good bike split followed by a bad run split.
  • Volume Running
  • Do you keep making your long run longer and longer and longer?
  • We have to be consistent with volume
  • You CAN make time for more short runs
  • You shouldn’t feel WRECKED from running
  • How we OVER-DAMAGE our body
  • What’s wrong with thinking “I have to do the distance”
  • Accumulated Fatigue
  • Accumulated Fitness
  • Don’t let the swim crush you before you start
  • Spreading out the Volume
  • How to know when you’re getting into good shape
  • Why your long runs might be counterproductive
  • Don’t burn your matches in training, wait till races
  • Is “Faster” really the training goal??
  • Don’t add extra salt tonight cause you forgot it yesterday

There’s a time and place for being serious, but most of us tend to train and race better when we’re relaxed and coming from a place of gratitude. Today we talk about how to race and train “free.” We look at the difference between intensity and focus, and ways to embrace the unknown. Have you ever found your happy place on the run? Can you get off the bike with a fuller tank? Also, what setting A, B, and C goals for your race looks like.

  • Does LOL on text really mean you’re laughing out loud?
  • Laughter as a mood shifter
  • The impact of our isolation on training
  • When life is hard, people need people
  • Taking ourselves too seriously
  • Drawbacks of perfectionism
  • Lack of nuance in communication
  • Loops of seriousness and training baggage
  • The weight of the world
  • Added intensity means added stress
  • Focus vs. Intensity
  • Do your expectations include being healthy?
  • Perfectly adhering to the plan even if it’s misery
  • This is supposed to be something you LOVE
  • Addiction to the outcome of your favorite team
  • What do you WANT right now
  • Stop while you’re ahead mentality
  • Today isn’t race day
  • Falling in the same traps
  • Taking your perspective seriously
  • Too much internalization with training
  • Days off that turn into months
  • Embracing the unknown
  • Are your goals selling yourself short?
  • Detaching from numbers

Great questions from the listeners! Today we tackle core work; how much, how often. Also, recognizing and improving your weaknesses in the correct way. We get into bike fit and why it might be even more important for your run. Finding challenges to alleviate boredom. Also, if you’ve thought about coaching we get into what it really means and things you should be focused on. Finally, long swim layoffs and how to be a better and more purposeful swimmer next season.
