This may seem simple or boring but we believe it is the absolute key to successful racing. Be patient, often way longer than you think you need to be. When you pass or get pass matters. We also look at why people lose motivation in triathlon and the reason is often easy to fix. Do you train with a negative split mentality? Do you take what the course gives you? And we’ll tell you why training by MPH is a losing battle.

Topics:

  • BBMC - Blake Becker shout out
  • The power of holding back in training
  • Ironman and Pacing
  • Swim Gears
  • How much time do you really save in the swim?

We head back to our roots with this one as Mike is at the lake in Wisconsin and Robbie is at his mom's in Nashville. We talk about training on vacation, how to focus and what's important. Also, the “Ironman freak out” and how most athletes translate their panic into over training. Can you be in better Ironman shape than 70.3 shape? And finally we look at IRONMAN Wisconsin’s move to June and how that will affect athletes and the race itself.

  • The IRONMAN FREAK OUT
  • Who would be our ideal guest?

Another "Road Cast" as we go over everything we learned and experienced at Ohio 70.3. C26 had 30 athletes race, including Coach Robbie, and Mike (Run Relay slot). It turned out to be a much tougher day than we thought with high humidity and dew point. We talk about things we did right and things we would have done differently. The delayed start, the stories within the race and our general impressions of Ohio 70.3.

This one meanders a bit, but then gets into actionable Ironman racing strategies. How physical meets mental throughout the day. When/if to turn up the bike, and how to think about your marathon. We get into training harder than you should race and how that translates into mile by mile strategy. We also talk about how to tackle your “B-Race” and why the results shouldn’t fool you. We talk about peaking at the right time, how you should feel out of the swim and off the bike, and playing the Ironman “run game.” It’s all about nailing the first 135 miles.

Improvement comes when we’re least stressed but the pressure to be green in training peaks or perfect leading up to a race can take over our mindset, and take away the fun. Today… we look at what it looks like to “try” and to “not try.” Going from mentally weak to strong. We talk about unhealthy obsessions, what a “successful” race looks like. And skewed views of perfection. This is your journey and you should assign your own value to success in training, racing, and life.

There’s a lot of beauty in bad days. They can remind us that we’re in the ballpark, we still need work, or help us realize patience. We always have work to do and successful triathletes don’t get too high or too low depending on the day. So much of this sport is mental and if you can focus on controlling how you look at things, you will be in a better place to race. Just because a gadget is out there doesn’t mean you need it. Some of the best athletes train by feel and effort. Also.. how bike training helps your run, how to adjust mindsets, and letting go of “easy.” And… How to tell when your training is going well.

Are you training for goals or the Possibilities. It’s an interesting distinction, but when you leave it open ended there’s less “what do I do next” and more discovery. This is one them from today’s cast, the other is, in order to reach the heights we know we can reach, we have to do the work. We talk about the Olympic Swim Trials and how swimmers don’t get caught up in gadgets, but focus on how to get better and train for the possibilities. We also talk about how to get faster on the bike and why the best way to get better in this sport is by keeping things simple.

It’s easy to do things we’re good at, but triathlon weaknesses usually set the race tone. Today we talk about how we’ve been pushing each other to work on the weak links in our game. We also explain how strengths can turn weakness because we “think we got it.” We look at training “trouble signs” and finding ways to enjoy disciples we may not like or neglect. It’s hard to race well when you have a glaring weakness…. Progress, not perfection is the name of the game in triathlon. Roll when it's hot.

It was a massive weekend in Chattanooga and at the C26 Hub. We had fifty people racing and hundreds stopped in to say hi. Today, we reflect on Chattanooga 70.3 with a pretty intense reminder of how tough racing can be. We critique the swim start a bit and discuss how unfortunate it was to have the first cyclist in and last cyclist out so close together. We look at racing mistakes and how to work on them. And generally get into the principle of how race day means being ready to dig deep.

Topics:

  • We’re out of “spectator shape”
  • This race felt back to normal
  • Swim start critique
  • Did you underestimate the swim?
  • Were you diligent in cooling yourself all day?
  • When nutrition is overrated
  • Making smart decisions on the move
  • The number one way to beat the heat
  • Shout out to the chill people race morning and the volunteers
  • We knew it was a slow swim as soon as we saw the water
  • People forget how hard triathlon is
  • Good wake up call race
  • We need to practice digging deep
  • When you should try to “blow up”
  • How cycling training translates to the race
  • Don’t assume anything . . . racing is unpredictable
  • Are you sure you over-biked?
  • It’s all about your mindset
