We start by looking at nutrition and weight loss in triathlon. How to think about it and do it correctly. Then we have a lot of running talk. We get into strength, form, posture, and why track workouts aren’t usually the best thing for long course triathletes. We get into Owning Your Zones in running, how to best go from Ironman to a marathon, and what off-season weight training should look like. Then a nice discussion about what it takes to HOLD RUN FORM over the course of a 70.3 or Ironman.

With over 50 athletes on the course, including co-host, Mike, C26 Triathlon created a slew of memories at Ironman Chattanooga. The weather was perfect, but we were once again reminded how HARD it is to do these races. We get into the swim, bike, run from both an on and off the course perspective. Mike tells the story of his battle with Phil and Chet in what many called “The Crushing Iron War II.” We talk about how some people keep getting better and others continue to struggle in this sport. And finally how to evolve and grow with gratitude and why it’s so important to have fun.

We have a ton of experience with, and love, Ironman Wisconsin. Today we go through the most important factors for you to have a solid race. We look at keys to race morning and being relaxed for the swim. How to handle the unique transition. We also break down the body-blow bike course from a strategy perspective. This is not a PR type of course and it’s best to be smart, be ready for rough roads, lots of turns and never ending climbs, and tons of spectators. The run course is challenging but fair. Lots of support. We’ll look at how to approach all the different sections.

  • Wisconsin bike hills
  • In-race recovery

This is all about being ready for, and handling, those tough moments in your race. Also, what to, and what not to buy before a race. There’s a difference between bad workouts and digging a hole, but how do you deal with a tough day in training? Why does it happen? How can you use it to your advantage? Don’t let your mindset tell you today sucks way too early. We get into making your race “more comfortable,” the smart last minute decisions, and last minute race purchases.

  • It’s cooling down and heating up
  • Wisconsin weather
  • Chattanooga forecast
  • It’s the busiest time of the year
  • Hair cut talk
  • Chaffing
  • Race simulation weekends
  • Bad workouts vs. Digging a hole
  • Don’t let your mindset tell you today sucks
  • Raising expectations on race day
  • Swimming as a guide to fatigue
  • Bad workouts are just part of it
  • Last minute race purchases
  • Fine tuning fueling
  • Bike fits
  • Make your race “easier” by adding comfort
  • Don’t buy speed
  • Spend money on less stress
  • Invest in comfort
  • Buying things to make up for lack of training/fitness
  • None of it matters until the last half of the run
  • Practice not quitting
  • You never know what the day is going to bring

Training doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t) leave you feeling demolished. Do you see glimpses of success? Then you’re on the right track. We want to break down just enough to recover and come back, not sit in the shop. A deeper look at how accumulating volume prepares you for the race and why you don’t have to put in massive bricks and training rides just to prove you can “do it.” We look at smart cycling and gearing, along with running the run and how to pace, hold back, and have something left at the end.

  • Slow to warm up
  • “Worst Ride of My Life” comments
  • Colins Cup
  • Road bike vs. Tri Bike

If you know you can finish a long workout, but it will shell you for the next week, why would you do it? Today, it’s about reality checks and truly feeling happy and healthy with triathlon. It’s about fitting triathlon into your life, not the other way around. We all have so many pressures and distractions, how do we balance it all, especially with a big race on the horizon. We talk about respecting your time, closing your inner circle, and putting things that matter first. We look at the realization that we’re all flawed and sometimes we have to let go.

Topics:

  • When coaches feel like the mother of the bride
  • Humidity, dew point, and freaking out
  • Power Bars and Podiums
  • Prisoners of the moment
  • Sweat rate and water
  • This is the hottest and hardest time of the year
  • People are overwhelmed
  • Understand triathlon’s place in your world
  • Failure to hydrate and fuel
  • Digging out from a hole
  • What to do when you start to panic
  • Respecting your time!
  • You can’t do everything
  • Energy going to wasteful places
  • Closing your inner circle
  • Anxious about things we can’t control
