Today we cover a lot of ground. Heat and humidity's impact on swimming. Best hill workouts. How to manage strength, speed, and PRs as you age. Switching gears from triathlon to ultra marathons. Popularity build of "alternative" races. Ironman brand going forward. Supplements. Hiking vs. Running. Core temp recalibration. Strength training. Going from a 70.3 to a Full.

Questions from Athletes:

  • How is it that humidity has an impact on swimming? I mean, I’m in water... 100% humidity….
  • What are the best run workouts to fit in hills/elevation
  • Help me with the mindset around getting older and slower. When I was younger every race was a PR, shoot... every workout was a PR. (Maybe exaggerating) Now that I’m starting over every workout and every race can feel like a disappointment, regardless if I gave it hell or not.
  • If you are trained for an Ironman Race and it gets cancelled, how would you change up your training to do an 45 mile ultramarathon instead and how long would you need to get ready? Asking for a friend 😊
  • Is this the year that creates an adventure racing mindset? Swim/run, gravel rides, trail running?
  • If you have never done triathlon, how many olys before bumping to a half, and how many halfs before attempting a full. This understanding each person is different age/condition/athleticism.
  • I would love to hear you opinion on how Ironman will improve their image after refusing to be flexible with refunding athletes with every race being cancelled. Will athletes still be loyal or will the brand die?
  • How bad am I making my coach pull her hair out by adding half marathon & full marathon races in at random like 2-4 months out? Or is it really no big deal?
  • I second this question. Hey can I tuck a 50k in a few weeks before my 70.3? 🤷‍♀️
  • This time of year I can get out for sunrise swims. So peaceful. When I do i don’t have time to fit in my strength training. Should i still do some form of strength still or swim harder to keep upper body strong.
  • Where do I start with strength training? Videos, Yoga, planks/push ups? (47yo female)
  • Do you feel like you can gain all the strength necessary FOR triathlon THROUGH triathlon by focusing on hills, big gear work, pulling in the pool, etc. Or do you think it's necessary to implement outside gym sessions focused only on strength? Also, beyond what I mentioned, what are some of your favorite swim/bike/run strength sessions?
  • What supplements do you think are important for triathlete health and what do you take on daily basis (if anything)?
  • Would it be silly to use swim paddles in OWS training ? Recent podcast one of my favs. I was there in lville 18 , will never forget my coach Robbie hug at the finish line. Lol.
  • Is there a way one can use multi-sport/triathlon training program to prepare for a marathon and improve timing? Fatigue due to higher running mileage is a limiter here.

With all the IMs being cancelled and thus registrations getting deferred until next year, how easy do you think it will be to sign up for an IM next year?
  • Who is your favorite athlete? And what made you choose me?
  • If you’re training g consistently and in “70.3 shape”, how long is an IM build? How much time before the race would you begin a race specific build?
  • To add on to Ashley Drayer's question--when is the best time/how many times per week to do said strength training so you're not so sore for the weekend long run?
  • If your athlete gets sick during a heavy training phase, how do you ramp them back up after they’re starting to feel better?
  • What advice would you give to an athlete who believes in the run slow to run fast but consistently needs to WALK/run to keep heart rate down to an acceptable range? I’ve working at “running” since this winter and I’m not seeing much difference in heart rate or speed. Thanks!
  • Hopefully this is a fun one...when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
  • How does one “find” the short course gears (speed)? When I’ve primarily been training long and strong for long course without getting injured because of adding to much intensity too fast.
  • When you push past the point of overheating your core temp (almost always on the run, amiright?) is there any way to pull it back down or are you just toast?
  • I enjoy hiking few times a month in the summer with elevation. 3-4 hr hikes with 2000 feet or greater in elevation change. How can this be done without affecting overall training. Can this be done in place of a long bike or run?
  • Can we get another dog cast?

It's better to be undertrained than 1% over trained. Today, we talk about how fatigue and stress mask fitness and why it's often more important to get your mind and emotions straight. We get into the freedom of training "light" and why adding more isn't the answer. Are you chasing all the time, or trailing with poise?

  • The baggage we carry
  • Stress is Stress
  • What’s a Day Off to you?
  • Fatigue Masks Fitness
  • Stress to soak in
  • It’s hard to be objective - 9 Hours in the car shelled me - looking from the outside I have a lot of shit going on - I need to ask for help
  • Go run with someone else
  • Take time to connect with people
  • Good stress is stress too
  • Minimal effective dose
  • When we think more is more is more
  • Addictive personality - being “fine” with feeling “fine” - getting used to feeling Juiced . . .
  • Burn your matches on Race Day
  • When your mind blows before your body
  • “I didn’t have it today” - athletes say that on 1 hour runs
  • The mental and emotional weighs you down
  • It’s better to be undertrained than 1% overtrained
  • What are we chasing?
  • Just because someone’s doing it doesn’t mean it’s right
  • More isn’t always better
  • Are you an over-achiever or over-doer
  • Chase under control
  • Does mood follow action or action follow mood?
  • Mike’s dog can sense she’s moving  . . .
  • They need some Muncie Volunteers, especially the day before the race in the Athlete Registration (Athlete Check in). So if you’re racing or have family going, they’d love your help and it’s a great way to help this race get things going in the right direction for our season!

Most of us get into this sport to change something in our lives, and that process can make things more uncomfortable. Sometimes we lean in for upper cuts instead of managing the body blows. Today, we talk about learning what we truly want and how training should help that process vs. digging a deeper hole. We also look at how Ironman is used as a mask or shield and how to let that go by showing yourself grace.

Topics:

  • Robbie hits a new age group
  • Mike is a beacon of hope in his 50’s
  • Camp is coming
  • Normalizing discomfort
  • People come to triathlon because they “want something”
  • Craving more training to alleviate the discomfort
  • What is so impactful that it can change the way you live
  • Changing pain thresholds
  • You can’t train your way into being happy

  • Using Ironman as a mask or Shield
  • Looking at the past to justify

  • Robbie talks about getting crushed in his trail race
  • And how he responded to not racing his race

There are many racing questions out there, so we brought on Race Director, Ken Hammond (Race Director of Ohio 70.3 and Musselman) for an in-depth conversation on how he, his staff, and Ironman have been approaching a race season hampered by a pandemic. He talks about the current state of racing, registration trends for upcoming races, and what changes might stick in the sport. He also gives us insight into a lot of challenges they've faced that most of us don't think about, like why Muncie 70.3 is on, but Ohio 70.3 isn't.

Topics:

  • What’s a race director do without racing?
  • how did he deal with the final cancellation of his races?
  • Race directors relationship to Ironman
  • Protocols with cities
  • Ironman’s mindset from the beginning of Pandemic
  • How open are cities to changing dates?
  • How does he mentally handle losing TWO races?
  • How they’re figuring out what actually works and makes
  • Why some cities are racing, some are not
  • Muncie is going, why can’t Ohio?
  • Discussion points for possibly localizing races
  • Medical support and volunteer hesitation
  • Return to racing initiative
  • Self-support racing

We love you all! Thanks for listening to our podcasts. Today, we look at winning and how that means different things to different people. This title comes from two things: The strategy behind days off and cherishing the ability to do what you do before you can't anymore. How good perspective can minimize stress and increase enjoyability. There's also TONS of cycling talk, including power, cadence and riding against the wind, and how to taper/prepare for two races that might wind up close together. Toward the end we discuss an awesome post from an athlete who described his "when" as his why. How being grateful for what you are able to do can be a genuine motivator to enjoy the possibilities of each day.

Topics:

  • The power of flexibility
  • Being comfortable if things don’t work out on time
  • Doing things the right way instead of having to do it
  • Minimizing current stress and minimize future stress
  • Riding into the wind
  • Cadence talk on the bike
  • Finding your most powerful pedal stroke
  • Pedal stroke explained
  • Single Leg drills
  • How dead spots add up
  • Knowing your limitations
  • Run cadence and load
  • Mastering effort between the zones
  • High turn over in the swim
  • Managing watts into and against the wind
  • Race spacing - How much time do you need between
  • The longer the taper . . . the . . .
  • Races are a HUGE stimulus boost
  • Fitness bumps from races
  • “My when is my why” - Patrick Gill
  • Do your days off really make sense??
  • You can’t get time back

Are you being too hard on yourself right now? We start with a look at adjusting your workouts for success. Then get into why FTP tests may be the most overrated thing for long course racing. Can you get away with doing your own bike fit? Bike injuries that affect your run. Unsupported races. The most useless things in triathlon. And how to ride intervals when you're outside.

Topics:

  • Too hard on yourself?
  • What are you reading?
  • Our life is the toughest to navigate
  • People will find a way
  • Do we have faith in where this is going?
  • Are we getting stronger?
  • What’s the best thing we’ve seen during all of this?
  • The small things are what matters
  • Selfish or Selfless?
  • How often should I retest my FTP?
  • Why FTP tests are overrated
  • How most athletes RUIN their race
  • Which Race would Mike and Robbie Relive?
  • Which one would you do over?
  • Do you carry too much on the run/bike?
  • Self fit a bike or bike shop fit? Save money or no for first true road bike. New to biking.
  • I’m finally getting the hang of pushing intervals on the trainer. How do I best translate this to outside...seems harder to control effort.
  • What is your insight and advice for athletes participating in or adding their own virtual run/bike races during this time and what can we learn from these results?
  • Lots of talk about unsupported (i.e. bring your own hydration/nutrition) races. Thoughts? Is it even possible for a FULL IM?
  • What’s the most useless thing triathletes often try to force into their training?
  • Would you be open to regional training camps? How many people do you need for it to make sense?
  • Can you get stronger without a trainer? How often should recovery work - stretching, foam rolling, etc be incorporated & when? Like shortly after a workout? Later in the day? Before?

You work so hard, but can't seem to find that speed you want in the water. You’re still dragging, gasping, and not seeing much return from your investments. It's time to use the water and not let use you.

Swimming doesn't have to be so hard. Today we break it down in the simplest terms and make the swim stroke easy. We dive into the reach/entry, catch along with early vertical forearm, a solid pull, and powerful finish. Have your mind ready when you get back in the pool!

  • Hand into the water, it needs to be preparing to work.
  • Reach as far as you possibly can
  • When you enter the water early and tvhink about a high elbow out of the water, it forces you to shorten stroke
  • Why swimming is so difficult . . . we’re not used to it.
  • Early vertical forearm
  • Swimming is simple: Swimming square and staying in your box
  • What your arm should look like out of the water?
  • 3 Different parts of the box - the stroke
  • The front part, the middle, the back
  • Body position and staying high in the water
  • The cycle of a stroke
  • Where the stroke breaks down and gives you nothing .. .
  • Pressure on forearms
  • How to build REAL swim fitness . . .
  • Most of us swim the “easiest way” and taking the path of easiest resistance
  • Pressure and fatigue means you’re working
  • Developing different gears in the water
  • Building your Swim Cake
  • How to not go anaerobic in a race
  • Why your kick could be slowing you down
  • The competitor in you . . . be excited to jump in … game’s on
  • Fitness in swimming is a domino effect
  • What do do when you finally get back in the water
  • Work your system harder with 25s and 50s . . .
  • The dead spots in your stroke
  • Just because your arm is in the water doesn’t mean it’s doing anything
  • You can work so hard . . . and get nowhere. Sinking… gasping… swimming slow.
